Fussy Eating Dogs
Posted on: August 20 2014
I am the owner of possibly the fussiest dog on the planet.  Monty has been known to love a particular flavour of kibbles one day and then, the next day and the one after that (you get the idea) he'll refuse to eat it.  I'm not really sure how it all started as he seems to have been eternally fussy from a very small pup and now as a 1 year old, I think that we have tried over 8 different brands of kibbles.  From the very expensive to the vet recommended food, Monty has tried it all and turned his nose up.  The amount of money wasted on food that Monty has refused to eat is incredible.  Give him a whiff of roast chicken though.....and he will bark at me and nudge me until it comes out of...

Terrible Ticks
Posted on: June 12 2014
I’m always caught unawares by the start of the warmer weather and the sudden appearance of those devilish parasites we know as ticks, clambering to get a foothold on Monty’s flesh.  Ticks are more of a menace than you might think and pose all sorts of problems to your dog and to you.  These small blood sucking arachnids are carriers of a bacterial infection known as Lymes Disease which cannot only cause acute inflammation of the joints in a dog but more seriously can lead to kidney damage or complications of the nervous system, although this is more rare.  It also affects us humans and a tick which remains unnoticed on the skin for a prolonged period could make you feel quite unwell as...

Toxic Treats to be aware of around the home
Posted on: May 09 2014
With all the Easter chocolate still lurking around, I've been keeping a beady eye on Monty.  He adores any choccy aromas in the house and will sniff at any wrappers so I am particularly cautious and have taken to stockpiling chocolate eggs in unreachable places. Talking to my mother-in-law recently about Monty's chocolate sniffer dog skills, it turns out that she had never heard of chocolate being toxic for dogs.  Over the years, she has had many dogs and never realised that chocolate could be so dangerous.  I pondered that if she didn't know then it is more than likely that lots of us are totally unaware of the potential hazards our dogs are surrounded by every day.

Taking a walk on the wild side
One of the first things I learned when we swapped the Big Smoke for the countryside eight months ago, was the importance of a well-trained dog.  When we moved, Monty our working cocker spaniel, was only a few months old and I thought that I had nailed his 'recall' commands firmly.  Monty was brilliant at coming back to the whistle in the park and I just assumed that it would be the same once we were wandering the bridleways around our new rural home.  How wrong I was!  At the first sign of horses, acres of green and any quantity of game birds, Monty was off like a rocket and refused to come back despite me yelling, cajoling and frankly begging him to...
