A Christmas Poem: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Dog poem

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the land,

Happy pooches were snoozing, treasured toys close at hand.

The dog leads were hung by the back door with care,

In the hope that long walks were a Christmas day affair.

Little puppies were nestled all snug in their beds,

Thoughts of playtime destruction danced through their sweet heads.

What fun and excitement, a fully laden new tree,

What are those twinkly lights? Let’s tug them and see…..

Oh dear, run, run, run! They’ve all heard the commotion,

Better strike a cute pose, look at them with utter devotion.

For they may be cross now, that’s no real surprise,

But no-one can resist, these soft puppy eyes!

The older dogs sighed, they’d seen this all before,

The experienced Jack Russell and wise Labrador,

Except wait, what was that? The terriers turned with a start,

A turkey bigger than us? That’s still worth a good bark!

The once calm tails now wagging, sleepy eyes shining bright,

Maybe, just maybe, we’ll be allowed one small bite?

Oh no! It’s been hidden away, out of sight out of mind?

Ha! With our sense of smell that’s an easy one to find!

But the hour's getting late, it’s been a long, tiring day,

That great walk in the park, followed by hours and hours of play.

It really is a dog’s life you know, the very best life there is,

We want to spend it with you, share every ounce of love we have to give.

And before we bid you farewell, there’s one important thing left to do,

Its Christmas Eve after all, and we really want to thank you

For bringing us into your home, your life and your heart,

For the walks, treats and cuddles, and the love you impart.

So we decided to decorate those beautiful clean floors,

With a festive layer of dog hair and Christmas muddy paws!

It's our special gift to you, you’ll see it at first light,

Happy Woofmas to all and to all a good night!
